A High-Quality Travel Bag Brand by a Long-Established Japanese Manufacturer

PROTECA debuted in 2004 as a Made-in-Japan brand dedicated to creating the ultimate in quality and functionality, with suitcases at the core of its identity. Its parent company, ACE Co., Ltd., is a pioneer in suitcase manufacturing in Japan, having produced suitcases for more than 60 years. In 1964, ACE began domestic suitcase production and later manufactured and distributed licensed products for international luggage brands. On its 40th anniversary, the company resolved to develop its own original suitcase brand with global expansion in mind. The result—an embodiment of its accumulated craftsmanship and innovation—was PROTECA.

Every PROTECA suitcase is crafted by skilled artisans at the company’s own factories in Japan.

The brand name derives from three concepts: Protect, Technology, and ACE—the company's founding philosophy. PROTECA developed proprietary innovations such as Magic Stop, a hand-operated caster stopper, and Silent Caster wheels equipped with precision bearings for exceptionally smooth rolling. These thoughtfully engineered features—born from a distinctly Japanese sensitivity to detail—quickly earned widespread acclaim. More than two decades after its launch, PROTECA has become beloved by travelers in Japan and abroad, synonymous with high-quality, high-performance Japanese craftsmanship. Since then, the brand has continued to introduce new technologies ahead of the curve and unveil innovative designs, evolving year after year. With over 20 series in its lineup—each defined by strengths in functionality, capacity, lightness, and design—travelers can easily choose according to their needs.

Another defining strength of PROTECA lies in its meticulous attention to color expression and surface finishes. From models ideal for business trips or extended travel to those equipped with expandable capacity for when your luggage increases mid-journey, the lineup thoughtfully responds to a wide range of travel needs.

PROTECA’s proprietary Silent Caster® system enables remarkably quiet movement. Public testing has verified an approximate 30% reduction in perceived noise compared to conventional casters. It is paired with the Bearon Wheel®, featuring ultra-durable chrome steel bearings engineered to minimize friction and ensure an exceptionally smooth glide.

The patented Magic Stop (caster stopper) allows you to lock the wheels instantly with a single touch of the switch located on the handle.

Instead of the aluminum commonly used in suitcase frames, PROTECA employs a high-strength, lightweight magnesium alloy. Resistant to deformation at room temperature, it is an exceptionally durable material—strong enough to be used in racing car wheels.

The Akabira Factory was established as Japan’s largest suitcase production facility, capable of integrated manufacturing from raw materials through to final assembly. A distinctive feature of PROTECA is that many models are finished with hand-applied cushioned interior linings—a technique that reportedly takes around three years to master.

In the assembly process for frame-type models, skilled artisans make final hand adjustments to the lock positioning and to any minute gaps or misalignments in the frame. The result is a suitcase that is both exceptionally sturdy and comfortable to use—born from this meticulous spirit of craftsmanship.

Each artisan is responsible for multiple stages of the production process, naturally gaining an understanding of both preceding and subsequent steps—an approach that encourages self-inspection and contributes significantly to consistent quality improvement.

During development and inspection, rigorous testing is conducted in the company’s own quality-control laboratory. Using a drum-like machine reminiscent of a front-loading washer, they check impact from drops and abrasion on the body surface, and they also thoroughly test resistance to humidity and temperature changes, down to handle strength and operation, and even caster rolling performance.

The Hibiya Flagship: A Japanese Garden–Inspired Setting for the Entire Collection

Opened in 2015 as PROTECA’s first flagship, the Hibiya store is in a prime location just one minute from Hibiya Station. Renovated in 2025, the space has been transformed into a Japanese-modern interior inspired by karesansui. This traditional Zen dry-landscape garden style evokes flowing water and natural scenery through stones and carefully raked sand. It is the only place where visitors can compare the entire PROTECA lineup—from timeless classics to the newest releases—all at once. True to PROTECA’s commitment to both function and design, suitcases are displayed across entire walls, allowing customers to appreciate the character of each series at a glance.

In addition to the Hibiya flagship, PROTECA operates two other dedicated stores: one at Tokyo Midtown Yaesu and another at Hilton Plaza Osaka.

The monochrome palette and gently curved fixtures—evoking the flowing lines of a karesansui garden—beautifully showcase the distinctive character of each suitcase.

Given its location, the store attracts many international visitors. Some make it a point to stop by each time they return to Japan—a testament to the enduring trust in Made-in-Japan quality.

Five Popular Series, Chosen for Functionality and Design

PROTECA’s suitcases are broadly divided into standard and luxury lines. Here, we spotlight five of the most popular series, each distinguished by its unique strengths.

The lineup spans a diverse range of series that reflect today’s suitcase trends—from the POCKET LINER2 shown here, with its open pocket at the upper front, to front-opening models, high-capacity trunk styles, and expandable designs that offer added storage when needed.

【360G4】

Often regarded as the face of the brand, the 360G4 (Three-Sixty G4) is a signature series that brings together PROTECA’s proprietary technologies in full. Its defining feature is a zipper construction that runs around the entire case, allowing it to be opened from any direction—true 360-degree accessibility. It also incorporates PROTECA’s exclusive Magic Stop wheel-lock system, operated by a hand switch, along with Silent Caster® technology that significantly reduces perceived rolling noise, and Bearon Wheel® engineering for exceptionally smooth movement.

The design was created by nendo, the design office led by Oki Sato. The body is made from a lightweight yet highly durable hybrid resin combining polycarbonate and ABS, offering excellent resistance to impact and abrasion. Available in five colors—including Black and Dusty Rose—the series comes in six sizes ranging from 24 to 105 liters. (Shown: 105L / ¥102,300.)

The interior is finished in an elegant ice blue. It features a durable racquet-coil zipper that resists thread breakage, and a water-repellent treatment helps minimize moisture penetration. The dividers and pockets are thoughtfully designed for easy access—even when the suitcase is standing upright.

A highly functional piece that allows you to access your belongings from any direction—top, bottom, left, or right—depending on your dominant hand or the situation. In addition, the interior can be configured in two ways: double-sided storage or single-sided storage, offering flexibility to suit different packing styles.

【J5 Collection】

For those seeking a heightened sense of luxury, consider the J5 Collection, launched in 2025. It offers elevated functionality and refined detailing rooted in Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. The design draws inspiration from lacquered bunko-bako (traditional document boxes) and inrō (tiered cases once worn with a kimono). Body colors reflect distinctly Japanese tones such as Susutake (smoked bamboo brown), Ama-iro (linen beige), and Kokutan (ebony). Surface finishes—ranging from leather-like to wood-grain textures—are carefully matched to each color to enhance its depth and character. The lineup includes three models: the frame-type SHISUI-F, the lighter zipper-type SHISUI, and the zipper-type INRYU. All are equipped with dual-wheel Silent Caster®, Bearon Wheel®, and the proprietary Magic Stop system.

SHISUI-F in Tetsukon (Iron Blue). Its cast-metal–inspired, artful texture and gently curved lines—evoking the natural beauty of surface tension—create a striking presence. It is also available in Kokutan (ebony) and Susutake (smoked bamboo brown), and comes in three sizes: 40L, 70L, and 99L. (Shown: Check-in XL 99L / ¥209,000.)

The interiors shared by SHISUI-F, SHISUI, and INRYU are finished in a refined black, creating a distinctly luxurious atmosphere. A standout feature of SHISUI-F is its newly developed frame-lock mechanism, designed exclusively for this model. It offers a high level of airtight sealing, yet can be opened and closed effortlessly with a single finger.

Metallic materials and softly brushed fabrics are used throughout, with careful attention paid to tactile quality as well as visual appeal.

All SHISUI-F, SHISUI, and INRYU models come with a protective case cover to guard the body against scratches, as well as a wire-frame garment case (excluding Cabin and Continental Cabin sizes), designed to help prevent wrinkles in suits and other garments.

The zipper features a racquet-coil design with an enhanced water-repellent treatment for added protection. The versatile silver finish—suited to any setting—is one of the most popular colors in the INRYU lineup. Available in three sizes: 35L, 56L, and 108L.(Shown: Trunk XL 108L / ¥198,000.)

The in-house-developed dual-wheel Silent Caster® has been tested by a public institution and proven to reduce perceived noise by approximately 30% compared to standard casters. Paired with Bearon Wheel® technology engineered to minimize friction, it delivers quiet and remarkably smooth movement—even in larger sizes.

Silver may be a classic suitcase color, but INRYU’s exterior—finished with a metal skin coating created through metallic vapor deposition—offers a distinctly deeper, more substantial presence.

【POCKET LINER2】

POCKET LINER2, featuring an open pocket at the upper front, is an ideal companion for business trips. Equipped with Silent Caster wheels incorporating Magic Stop and Bearon Wheel technology, this long-standing popular series also stands out for its distinctive color variations.

The subtly placed logo at the lower left adds a refined accent. Available in four distinctive colors that stand out from the crowd—including the Sunset Orange shown here, as well as muted tones like Olive Drab and Offshore Blue—the series offers five sizes ranging from 32L to 94L.(Shown: 94L / ¥86,900.)

The open pocket offers ample space for easily accessing a laptop or A4-sized documents. Unzipping the inner pocket also allows direct access to the main compartment, adding an extra layer of convenience.

【FULLESTER EX】

FULLESTER EX is designed with inspiration drawn from the detailing of the Japanese sword. Its defining feature is an expandable function discreetly built into its sharp, streamlined body, allowing the gusset to extend when additional capacity is needed.

Shown here is Mistral Hairline, a delicate blue reminiscent of traditional Japanese painting. Other available finishes include Gunmetallic Hairline and Silver Hairline. The series comes in three expandable size options: 36L / 45L (expanded), 76L / 89L, and 105L / 120L.(Shown: 105L / 120L / ¥93,500.)

The body features a metallic hairline finish, accented by side rib lines inspired by the grooves of a traditional Japanese sword. In the 105L model shown here, the expandable function increases capacity to 120 liters when extended. It is also equipped with Silent Caster wheels incorporating Magic Stop and Bearon Wheel technology.

Comprehensive After-Sales Care—Another Hallmark of PROTECA

PROTECA" is also loved for its generous product warranty, which is unusual for a travel bag brand. PROTECA offers a 10-year warranty period for suitcases purchased from authorized dealers, excluding outlet stores, and provides after-sales service. In addition, for the first three years after purchase (10 years for the J5 Collection), PROTECA offers a Premium Care Warranty, which covers free repairs for damage caused by airlines and shipping companies. We have established this care system because we are confident in our products and want you to use them comfortably and with peace of mind. The PROTECA brand is not only about products, but also about Japan-quality service.

For the 10-year product warranty, a purchase receipt, delivery note, or order confirmation email serves as proof of purchase.

While most manufacturers exclude airline-related damage from complimentary repair coverage, PROTECA stands apart by including it under its warranty protection.
