Japanese Aesthetics and Crystal-Clear Benefits

"SEKKISEI" is a skincare brand celebrating its 40th anniversary—one that every Japanese person knows and that international customers seek out by name. We spoke with Ayako Takayama, PR representative for KOSÉ's "SEKKISEI," about what makes Japanese cosmetics so compelling.

"First of all, the three-kanji name, meaning 'snow,' 'skin,' and 'essence,' is memorable and distinctly Japanese. People tell us the name itself conveys the concept beautifully—a lotion that gives skin a snow-like translucency," says Takayama.

The striking cobalt blue bottle, emblazoned with those three bold kanji characters, is instantly recognizable. Like "SEKKISEI," Japanese cosmetics that feature distinctly Japanese names and packaging while offering clear, understandable benefits tend to resonate strongly with consumers.

"SEKKISEI's" Japanese character extends to its formulation. Since its 1985 launch, the brand has focused on enhancing skin's translucency using ingredients derived from traditional Japanese botanical herbs—known as wakan shokubutsu. This commitment to herbal botanicals has become a key draw for many customers.

Four Decades of Research-Backed Confidence

International consumers widely recognize Japanese beauty brands for their earnest, research-driven approach. This foundation of scientific rigor creates a sense of trust that lies at the heart of J-beauty's appeal.

"SEKKISEI," with its focus on botanical herb-derived ingredients, has maintained nearly 40 years of consistent natural science research.

"We discovered new brightening properties in licorice root—a botanical herb ingredient we've used since the beginning. This allowed us to obtain dual efficacy approval for brightening and skin irritation prevention, which we incorporated into our reformulated lotion," explains Takayama.

The discovery of new brightening properties—especially from trusted botanical herb sources—made major headlines in Japan.

Moreover, "SEKKISEI" employs dedicated "Translucency Researchers" who work specifically on the brand. This research program began to scientifically define "translucency"—a quality of beautiful skin that's notoriously difficult to quantify. The results have been fully integrated into products, and the research continues today.

This sense of human-to-human connection and warmth represents the very essence of Japanese cosmetics.

Gender-Neutral Formulations for All Skin Types

Another reason "SEKKISEI" has thrived in Japan for 40 years and now resonates globally is its gender-neutral approach—remarkably, a philosophy that has been at the heart of the brand since its launch, making it a true pioneer.

"From the start, our concept has remained unchanged: to reveal skin's natural translucency regardless of country or gender. Drawing inspiration from Eastern medicine's holistic philosophy, we address skin concerns comprehensively rather than targeting isolated issues, balancing the skin as a whole. This approach allows us to create products suitable for any skin type, transcending gender, age, and nationality," says Takayama.

The texture of gender-neutral cosmetics adds to their appeal. Both the signature lotion and emulsion absorb into skin as smoothly as melting snow, leaving no sticky residue.

"Asian customers are often drawn to keywords like 'brightening' and 'translucency,' while Western customers frequently cite the refreshingly lightweight texture as their primary reason for choosing these products," notes Takayama.

Clean Beauty Values for a Global Audience

"SEKKISEI" has remained true to its original concept while strengthening its commitment to clean, holistic product development for today’s global market. This evolution is reflected in the "SEKKISEI BLUE" series launched in 2025. As a clean beauty cosmetics line, the series highlights "SEKKISEI"'s dedication to using plant-derived ingredients and aims to establish sustainable cycles of receiving and returning nature's gifts.

The series features recyclable glass and plant-resin bottles, does not involve animal testing in product development, and actively participates in environmental protection initiatives. As a sister line to the beloved original "SEKKISEI" series, "SEKKISEI BLUE" has quickly gained popularity and excellent reviews among clean beauty consumers worldwide.
