The Journey of “Tamiya,” a Pioneer That Has Led Global Model Culture

“Tamiya” traces its origins back to Tamiya Shoji, founded in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1946. In 1948, the company embarked on its path as a model manufacturer, initially earning widespread support for its wooden ship and tank models. In the 1950s, Tamiya began producing plastic models. Starting with enduringly popular masterpieces such as the “Battleship Yamato,” the brand went on to release a succession of iconic kits.

In the mid-1970s, Tamiya introduced its electric RC car series, which became one of the brand’s signature product lines and achieved global success. Then, in the 1980s, “Mini 4WD,” a series of small, motorized racing model cars that run on dedicated tracks, later grew into a full-fledged social phenomenon. Despite their compact size, their precise engineering and high level of customization captivated people across generations.

The electric RC car series, which has gained countless fans throughout Tamiya’s long history. Its intricate design and powerful driving performance continue to fascinate both children and adults around the world. Inside the facility, these iconic models are displayed alongside a wide range of other products.

Exhibitions that allow visitors to experience the history of Tamiya products are held periodically within the facility. At the time of our visit, a special exhibition titled “The World of Honda and TAMIYA” was being held, featuring rare photographs and exclusive video footage from Tamiya’s collection, offering a retrospective look at the history of Honda F1™.

A Cultural Hub Where the “Present” and “Future” of Japanese Model Culture Converge

TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO serves as an important base for sharing Japanese model culture with the world. From classic models that tell the story of the brand’s history to highly anticipated new releases, the space embodies the concept: “Tamiya today is here.” It is an experiential facility designed for a wide audience—from devoted fans to beginners just starting out, as well as families.

Upon entering the facility, the first thing to capture visitors’ attention is a massive cabinet standing approximately four meters high and extending nearly 100 meters in length. Arranged in a zigzag pattern, the shelves display around 6,000 models, creating a scene reminiscent of a model museum. Playful design elements are incorporated throughout, such as drawers concealing large quantities of parts, stimulating visitors’ curiosity at every turn. With a café space and a wide selection of Tamiya merchandise, the facility offers a place where models can be enjoyed not merely as a hobby, but as a form of culture and experience.
