An Impressive Lineup of Records, Direct from Jamaica

Opened in 2003, Coco-isle Music Market offers an extensive range of genres rooted in Jamaican reggae, including ska and rocksteady. The lineup is so rich, it’s like tracing the history of Jamaican reggae from the 1960s to the present day. According to owner Kazuki Nakamura: “We get records shipped directly from Jamaica every day, and I personally check each one. I still discover artists and labels I’ve never heard of, which makes the process endlessly exciting.” The fact that even experts in the genre continue to encounter unknown recordings is a testament to reggae’s immense depth. Nakamura also notes a recent increase in customers from across Asia, reflecting reggae’s global reach.

Shibuya’s Premier Destination for Hawaiian Reggae

Reggae has spread worldwide, evolving uniquely in each region. In Japan, it’s known as “Japa-reggae,” while in Hawaii, it has become a beloved genre akin to traditional pop music. Coco-isle Music Market stocks a wide range of Hawaiian and Japanese reggae. Its Hawaiian reggae collection is among the most extensive in Shibuya. Owner Nakamura himself curated and wrote the liner notes for a compilation album of Hawaiian reggae. “Hawaiian reggae features beautiful melodies and a relaxed tempo. It’s a different kind of charm from Jamaican reggae. I hope more people come to appreciate it,” says Nakamura.
