In Search of Made-in-Japan Eyewear — ”ayame optical store”
With the concept of “Onko Chishin” (learning from the past to create something new), ”ayame” has gained popularity for its high-quality eyewear. Its directly managed store is the ”ayame optical store”. Opened in 2019 and renovated in March 2023, the store now showcases the full lineup of ”ayame eyewear”, marking the brand’s 15th anniversary.
The store features a large glass façade that allows abundant natural light to pour in, creating an inviting atmosphere. Inside, the spacious, open layout feels almost like an art gallery. This design reflects the brand’s vision of becoming a community-rooted eyewear store. Plenty of chairs are placed throughout the shop, allowing customers to sit comfortably and converse with staff while searching for the perfect pair of eyewear. The lighting is also carefully designed: fixtures that closely replicate natural sunlight make it possible to select frames in true daylight tones, even at night.
”ayame eyewear” is manufactured in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, a region world-renowned for eyewear craftsmanship. At the ”ayame optical store”, customers will find the full lineup of all models, as well as services such as lens replacement and nose pad customization. In addition, store-exclusive models are available. Due to their popularity, they often sell out quickly after arrival. If you happen to find one during your visit, don’t miss the chance to check it out.

At the ”ayame optical store”, what makes the experience special is not only the complete product lineup but also the spirit of hospitality — from attentive customer service to the background music.
Store manager Kota Namekata explains:
“When choosing eyewear, conversations with customers are essential. How do they want to be seen when wearing them? How do they want to present themselves? Some people even feel self-conscious about glasses. By carefully listening, we work together to find the one pair that truly fits them.”
This approach has earned high praise from international customers as well, becoming one of the reasons behind ”ayame’s” lasting popularity. Another distinctive feature is the background music: Yukue selects vinyl records from his personal collection, tailoring the sound to the weather and the mood of the day.Located in Harajuku, the heart of Tokyo fashion, yet offering a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere, the ”ayame optical store” is a destination worth considering when searching for sunglasses or eyeglasses.
