For nearly 30 years, a long-standing club shaping Shibuya’s nightlife
“Aoyama Hachi” is a long-established club known for its open space overlooking the bustling city through its windows, and for the variety of DJ performances guests can enjoy while moving between multiple floors. Over nearly 30 years, it has cultivated a unique atmosphere and culture that continue to attract visitors. Today, it draws more and more young people, who mingle with older generations, shaping a new kind of club culture
Located between Shibuya and Aoyama along Roppongi-dori, “Aoyama Hachi” has supported the nightlife culture of the Shibuya–Aoyama area since opening in 1996. Its four-story building offers different personalities on each floor: a DJ bar on the second floor, the main dance floor on the third, and a lounge bar on the fourth. From techno and house to drum’n’bass and jazz, a wide range of music resonates through the venue. The luxury of moving freely between floors and enjoying various sounds has kept this place beloved by club-goers across generations.
Owner Mr. Goto recalls:
“In the mid-1990s, nightlife spots were popular in Nishi-Azabu, Aoyama, and Omotesando. ‘Hachi’ was intentionally built right between those areas. At first, many visitors came from industries like fashion and hairdressing, but from the 2000s, we shifted to more underground music, and it became a hub for core clubbers.”
Its turquoise-blue exterior stands out distinctly. The first floor and basement belong to separate clubs, and many regulars enjoy hopping between them.
Throughout its 30-year history, “Aoyama Hachi” has endured challenges, including revisions to Japan’s Entertainment Business Law and the COVID-19 pandemic, which at times forced the club to suspend operations. Yet thanks to the support of loyal patrons and friends, it always revived. Today, in addition to weekday hours from 7:00 p.m. to 11:55 p.m., the club has established a unique weekend style known as “Asa Hachi” (“Morning Hachi”), starting from 6:00 a.m. This attracts people who still want to keep partying after the night ends, as well as visitors from overseas. Recently, more young people have been coming, mingling with veterans in their 30s and 40s, nurturing a new generation of club culture Owner Mr. Goto says: “The increase in young customers is something I’m truly happy about for the future of club culture. A space where adults and youth can enjoy themselves together—that’s the ideal, and that’s what ‘Hachi’ has become.”
The sound systems on the second and third floors are produced by KAWAMOTO AUDIO, among the highest-grade setups in Tokyo
Visitors to “Aoyama Hachi” all agree on its charm: the urban energy seen through its windows, the sense of openness, and the pleasure of enjoying diverse DJ performances while moving up and down the stairs. The traditions cultivated over decades permeate the entire space, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere This year, marking its milestone, “Aoyama Hachi” will host a four-day 30th-anniversary party in November. Owner Mr. Goto shared with a smile: “I kept going with the goal of reaching the 30th anniversary. Many DJs connected with ‘Hachi’ will be performing, so please come and join us.”
From the windows, you can enjoy the night view of cars streaming down Roppongi-dori and the cityscape of buildings—full urban atmosphere
