A Legendary Meikyoku Kissa That Has Stood the Test of Time

Founded in 1926 (the first year of the Showa era), Meikyoku Kissa Lion was established by Yanosuke Yamadera, who opened the kissaten with his mother in Namiki-bashi, Ebisu, at the age of 24. Although the original location was destroyed in the Tokyo air raids of 1945, the kissaten was rebuilt in its current location in 1950. The name "Lion" was inspired by the founder's cousin, who had trained at "Lion Bakery" in London. For nearly a century, this kissaten has been a beloved haven for classical music enthusiasts.

An Unparalleled Acoustic Experience with Custom-Built Speakers

Installed in the 1950s, the towering three-meter speakers create an immersive sound experience that fills the entire space. Designed by Toshiba’s acoustic engineers, these custom-built speakers were once featured in an American audio magazine. All seats face the speakers, ensuring the optimal listening experience. The front row on the second floor offers an especially powerful sound, making visitors feel as if they are in a concert hall.

Daily "Concerts" for an Unforgettable Experience

The store has over 5,000 vinyl records in its collection, and if CDs are included, the store has a rich collection of over 10,000 sound sources. The store plays classical music carefully selected by the staff, covering a wide range of genres from baroque to contemporary music. Every day at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., "Regular Concerts" are held, where you can enjoy a luxurious moment of powerful classical music at no charge, with a list of masterpieces that is updated monthly.

A Baroque Interior Crafted with Devotion by the First Owner

The Baroque-style interior, carefully designed by the original owner, creates a majestic and dignified atmosphere. Since its reconstruction in 1950, the café has retained its wooden structure, adorned with chandeliers and intricate decorations crafted by the founder himself. From the lion paintings and signage within the café to the design of its pamphlets, every detail reflects the personal touch of the first owner, preserving the café’s unique and timeless aesthetic.

Respecting the Culture of Meikyoku Kissa – A Space for Quiet Appreciation

A Meikyoku Kissa is a place dedicated to listening to music in peace. Conversations are kept to a minimum, and photography and video recording are strictly prohibited to maintain the serene atmosphere. At Meikyoku Kissa Lion, special cards are provided for quietly placing orders, such as requesting coffee without syrup or signaling when you’d like to pay the bill. Every detail is designed to create a space that cherishes both music and silence.
