Reggae, a genre born in Jamaica, has a deep and layered history. Located in Shibuya, Coco-isle Music Market is a record store dedicated entirely to While Shibuya boasts countless record shops, what makes this one stand out is its fully equipped sound system that allows visitors to physically feel the music. The shop also offers an exceptional selection of Hawaiian reggae—a subgenre still relatively unknown in Japan—making it an inviting space even for those new to reggae.
An Impressive Lineup of Records, Direct from Jamaica
Opened in 2003, Coco-isle Music Market offers an extensive range of genres rooted in Jamaican reggae, including ska and rocksteady. The lineup is so rich, it’s like tracing the history of Jamaican reggae from the 1960s to the present day. According to owner Kazuki Nakamura: “We get records shipped directly from Jamaica every day, and I personally check each one. I still discover artists and labels I’ve never heard of, which makes the process endlessly exciting.” The fact that even experts in the genre continue to encounter unknown recordings is a testament to reggae’s immense depth. Nakamura also notes a recent increase in customers from across Asia, reflecting reggae’s global reach.
One of reggae’s greatest appeals is how it resonates through the body when played loud. At Coco-isle Music Market, that immersive experience is available right in-store.
The sound system, built by KAWAMOTO AUDIO—the same manufacturer used at the renowned Shinjuku club “Reggae / DUB club OPEN”—delivers powerful, high-fidelity sound. Every record in the shop can be sampled through this setup.
Individual listening stations are also available, perfect for those who want to enjoy records at their own pace.
Reggae has spread worldwide, evolving uniquely in each region. In Japan, it’s known as “Japa-reggae,” while in Hawaii, it has become a beloved genre akin to traditional pop music. Coco-isle Music Market stocks a wide range of Hawaiian and Japanese reggae. Its Hawaiian reggae collection is among the most extensive in Shibuya. Owner Nakamura himself curated and wrote the liner notes for a compilation album of Hawaiian reggae. “Hawaiian reggae features beautiful melodies and a relaxed tempo. It’s a different kind of charm from Jamaican reggae. I hope more people come to appreciate it,” says Nakamura.
