Bookshelf with 1,500 books selected by Ginza Tsutaya

The most distinctive feature of Shiba Park Hotel is its unique concept of being a "hotel with books. The library lounge on the first floor offers a wide variety of books in genres such as architecture, art, food, and Japanese culture, and approximately 60% of the books are in English, making it an international lineup. About 60% of the books are in English, making for a rich international lineup. In the library space on the second floor, books are categorized along the time axis of "past," "present," and "future," allowing visitors to experience the multilayered appeal of Japanese culture, including Kabuki, Edomae sushi, and the manga "AKIRA," which depicts the future.

The selection includes science fiction works depicting images of the "future" of technology and cities, as well as visual books on the evolution of architecture and design.

The "Current" shelves, which reflect the realities of Tokyo and Japan today, feature books on food, fashion, and traditional culture in their current state.

The “past” shelf highlights the roots of Japanese culture, with themes such as kabuki, tea ceremony, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Timeless Details Reflecting Japanese Aesthetics

Founded in 1948, Shiba Park Hotel retains original architectural features including its stately brick façade, lobby columns, grand staircase, and reception area. Of particular note is the reception counter, which was formerly a bar and has been thoughtfully renovated with a lowered floor, enabling guests and staff to interact naturally at eye level—even while seated. Elements of traditional Japanese aesthetics are woven throughout the hotel. On the first floor, carpets feature flowing water motifs, while the second-floor carpets are adorned with elegant chrysanthemum patterns.

The story of the central grand staircase, connected beyond time

At the heart of the hotel, the grand staircase stands as a symbolic structure linking the past, present, and future of Shiba Park Hotel. With each step, guests can experience the passage of time—not just physically, but as part of the hotel's narrative. Displayed along the wall is a replica of an old map depicting the former temple dormitory of “Dojō-ji,” once located on this site. This legacy of learning continues to shape the hotel’s philosophy today.
