In September 2025, “and wander” opened a new base at “NEWoMan TAKANAWA.” The location was chosen not only to further expand the brand’s domestic fan base, but also to serve the growing inbound tourism demand. TAKANAWA, where Shinkansen lines and conventional railway lines intersect, is an area defined by constant movement. It functions as a point of connection—before and after heading to the mountains, or as part of everyday urban life—where people can think about outdoor activities. For this reason, “and wander NEWoMan TAKANAWA” is not designed as a store that simply displays products. Instead, it is conceived as an “urban-side base” where the brand’s philosophy is shared in a multidimensional way through products, space, photography, and real-world activities.

An Outdoor Space Defined by Structure, Not Decoration

The interior takes a different approach from conventional outdoor shops that rely on natural materials or decorative staging to create atmosphere. This space is designed on the premise of abundant natural light pouring in from outside, which is one of its defining characteristics. To make use of this light, the space incorporates a variety of plants inspired by kusamura—natural clusters of grasses and shrubs—adding visual accents and a sense of depth. The floor is finished with dark, ink-colored mortar, keeping the overall tone restrained so that the colorful products stand out more clearly.

Taking advantage of its direct connection to the station, the store is positioned as an “urban-side base” that can be visited before or after heading to the mountains, or as part of everyday life.

The acts of “hanging” and “hooking” clothing are designed to evoke the tactile experience of handling outdoor gear.

The key feature is the direct application of outdoor functional structures to store design.

Functional Beauty as Identity, Symbolized by Reflective Materials

One of the most striking elements in the store is the extensive use of reflective materials. Developed to improve visibility at night or in poor weather conditions, this material has played an important role in “and wander” products for many years. What the reflector symbolizes is not decoration for its own sake. Rather, it represents design that emerged as a necessary result of supporting safe movement. The fact that this function appears as a visual characteristic reflects the core philosophy of “and wander.” At “and wander NEWoMan TAKANAWA,” this way of thinking is extended beyond products to the entire space. The store is structured so that outdoor functionality continues to hold meaning even within an urban environment.

From “a Store That Sells” to “a Base for Engagement”

One of the defining features of “and wander NEWoMan TAKANAWA” is its hiking club activities, which are organized with the store as a starting point. These activities are not positioned as simple events, but as spaces for action, based on the premise of actually walking in the mountains. The hiking club operates regularly as fieldwork that also serves as product testing. Activities mainly take place in the Tanzawa, Mount Takao, and Yatsugatake areas, at a frequency of three to four times per month (held irregularly). Participation is open to both experienced hikers and beginners, with applications accepted via the brand’s official website. In addition, the store is staffed by team members with experience in running and hiking. Drawing on real field experience, staff members are able to offer product recommendations that consider not only trends, but also actual usage environments and points of caution—an experience unique to this store.
