The symbolic café and bar of Oku-Shibu.
“FUGLEN TOKYO” is a café and bar from Norway, which opened its first overseas branch in the Oku-Shibu (a nickname for the backstreets west of Shibuya, known for their stylish cafés, vintage shops, and relaxed atmosphere) area of Tokyo. The space, unified with Scandinavian vintage furniture, offers a harmonious mix of classical and modern design, creating a cozy yet stylish atmosphere. The coffee features light-roast single origins that bring out the beans’ natural fruitiness, while the cocktails are crafted with the same authenticity. As an icon of Oku-Shibu, the shop attracts many international visitors and is always bustling with life.
When speaking of cafés that represent Oku-Shibu, “FUGLEN TOKYO” is the first to come to mind. It was the Norwegian café’s very first overseas expansion, opening in Tokyo in 2012. From morning to night, the shop is lively with customers, including many from abroad, making it a true landmark of the area.
The interior exudes a distinctive atmosphere where warmth and modernity coexist. Tables and chairs are all Norwegian vintage pieces, while even tableware and vases carry Scandinavian touches. The space allows visitors to fully enjoy the appeal of Nordic design—classical yet refreshingly modern.
When visiting “FUGLEN TOKYO,” the first thing to try is the “Coffee of the Day.” The beans change daily, so the same taste may never be repeated. Purchased through direct trade without being tied to specific brands or regions, the beans are lightly roasted in-house, with minimal heat to highlight their natural aroma and flavor. Baristas carefully assess the beans’ condition and grind them at their peak, ensuring the best taste. Served exclusively as single origin without blending, each coffee showcases the unique character of its bean.
Coffee of the Day (Regular 410 yen, Large 490 yen). Fruity and juicy, letting you enjoy the simple essence of the beans.
Coffee beans are also available for purchase, making ideal souvenirs.
“FUGLEN TOKYO” is both a café and a bar. In Tokyo, it is rare to find a place that serves both authentic coffee and cocktails, making it a must-experience highlight. The bar offers cocktails based on recipes shared with the Oslo branch, along with originals unique to Tokyo. With cocktails served from the afternoon, it is also a great spot for daytime drinks.
Coffee-based cocktails are also recommended. Irish Coffee, available even during the day. 1,250 yen.
The “Fuglen Gimlet,” made by shaking gin infused with kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, and simple syrup. 1,250 yen.
