The Ultimate Hub for Gunpla — One of the World's Largest Selections
"THE GUNDAM BASE TOKYO" opened in 2017 inside "DiverCity Tokyo Plaza" as the official comprehensive Gunpla facility for Gundam and Gunpla fans worldwide. It offers visitors an immersive experience of both the history and the current state of the Gundam series. This massive entertainment franchise encompasses the animation series, which began with "Mobile Suit Gundam" (1979), as well as the plastic model kits known as Gunpla, Gundam Plastic Model Kits.
Located on the 7th floor of the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza commercial facility in Odaiba, THE GUNDAM BASE TOKYO lives up to its designation as an official comprehensive Gunpla facility. Operated by BANDAI SPIRITS Hobby Division—the company responsible for manufacturing and distributing Gunpla—this establishment carries approximately 2,000 varieties of model kits, from the original release in 1980 to the latest editions. A defining characteristic is that virtually all Gunpla sold here are manufactured in Japanese factories, making it not just a retail space but a venue where enthusiasts can experience the evolution of Gunpla craftsmanship throughout its history.
Beyond the shopping area, the Builders Zone features an operational "Painting Room"—a rental space (a fee is required) where visitors can paint Gunpla they've purchased. The room offers rental equipment that might be impractical for home use, such as airbrushes and compressors. Visitors can also receive guidance from staff members known as "Gunpla Meisters" and can take photos of their creations using impressive diorama setups. This facility showcases that Gunpla enjoyment extends far beyond mere assembly.
The product lineup extends well beyond model kits to include everything from plush toys to food items. Particularly popular across all age groups are products featuring Haro, the AI robot that has become an essential character in the Gundam series. Recent bestsellers include acrylic stands featuring Gunpla package artwork and gummies that come with package art cards. This diversity allows visitors to appreciate the appeal of the Gundam series' mobile suits and characters from multiple perspectives, beyond just model building.
IBeyond displaying and selling Gunpla, the facility includes areas where visitors can thoroughly explore the franchise's history, dating back to the debut of "Mobile Suit Gundam" in 1979. The venue features exhibits introducing the world of "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM," whose theatrical release was a significant hit last year, as well as comprehensive information on the latest series, "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX." Not only does the merchandise change with new arrivals, but special exhibitions also rotate according to trends and events, ensuring that each visit offers something new to discover.
