Step inside, and you'll feel as if you've been transported away from everyday life — into a nostalgic, retro-style café.
Now in its 61st year since its founding, "Royal" is a long-established kissaten—a traditional Japanese-style coffeehouse—celebrated for its refined, classical interior, featuring marble floors, chandeliers, red velour-style sofas, and stained glass. Of all its offerings, the most popular item on the menu is a traditional parfait, cherished just as it was when the kissaten first opened.
Located on the first basement floor of the "Kotsu Kaikan Building" built in 1965 in front of JR Yurakucho Station, "Royal" is a long-established restaurant that retains the interior design from the time of its opening, which the previous owner was particular about. Surrounded by a retro interior with marble floors and stained glass windows, it is like stepping back in time to the Showa period.
At the side entrance, a chandelier and the ”Royal” logo—both unchanged since the café opened—still greet customers. Even today, the logo maintains a charmingly retro and stylish appeal.
To suit modern times, the café's lighting has been updated to LED, making it more comfortable for guests who enjoy reading newspapers and books. At the back of the shop, the stained glass features a simple and refined design.
There are two main parfaits available year-round: the Chocolate Parfait and the Seasonal Parfait, which changes with the time of year. The Seasonal Parfait features fresh seasonal fruits—especially popular are the ”Melon Parfait” in summer and the ”Strawberry Parfait” in winter. Many customers visit specifically for these limited-time treats. In addition, the café offers three varieties of sundaes and other classic sweets unique to traditional kissaten culture.
Uncommon for a traditional kissaten, ”Royal” offers a well-rounded lunch menu including curry, pilaf, and pasta. All lunch sets include a salad and coffee (or tea) for a reasonable price of 1,000yen, making it a popular spot for nearby office workers during lunch hours. There’s also a weekday-only ”breakfast set” (700yen) available from 8:00 a.m., featuring thick toast, a boiled egg, and salad.
The ”Chocolate Parfait” offers a nostalgic, classic look with layers of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce. A stick of ”Pocky” adds a playful touch. Chocolate Parfait 1,000 yen
Equally popular is the ”Honey Toast”, notable for its impressive thickness of about 5 cm. Generously drizzled with honey, it pairs perfectly with a cup of expertly brewed drip coffee. ”Honey Toast” 750yen, ”Blend coffee” 700yen
