Enjoy genreless music, from hip-hop to house and techno

Since the 1990s, Shibuya has been known as one of Tokyo’s premier districts for quality clubs. More recently, smaller venues with a capacity of around 100 to 200 people—known as ko-bako (literally “small boxes”)—have been drawing attention. Located on the 7th floor of the GEM Jingumae building along Meiji Dori, FUMIN-YUGI LION (hereafter “LION”) is considered a pioneer of this ko-bako movement.

At LION, you’ll find not only DJ parties but also frequent live performances, with events happening almost daily throughout the year. One of its major appeals is its diverse and genre-free music lineup, covering hip-hop, R&B, house, techno, and more. On any given night, the space is packed with young music lovers and people from the fashion world, always radiating a lively energy. Just being there naturally lifts your spirits—LION is that kind of music bar.

A social hub for young creatives and industry insiders in music and fashion

LION opened in August 2020. During the pandemic, when face-to-face interaction was limited, it began operations with strict safety measures and gradually built a loyal following. The space is just the right size to take in the entire floor at a glance, making it perfect for spending time with friends. Before long, it became known as a gathering place for youth and industry professionals who are highly attuned to music and fashion trends. Its unique vibe has also gained strong support from performers—some DJs and artists have even gone on to expand their careers after playing here. Today, LION is widely recognized as a symbol of Shibuya’s nightlife.

A stylish interior, from the giant lion statue to the circular counter

As you step out of the elevator and into the venue, you're immediately greeted by a lion-themed art wall and a uniquely shaped mirror ball. Inside, a golden lion statue sits boldly at the center of the bar counter. The counter, which wraps around the floor in a circular layout, leaves a strong impression and has witnessed countless legendary nights. For sound, the venue uses VOID Acoustics—a British-made system used at clubs and festivals around the world. The audio is rich and clear, and finely tuned to allow easy conversation even during DJ sets.

A space adorned with art that reflects Tokyo’s aesthetic

Though now covered in tags and stickers, the restroom walls originally featured artwork by graphic artist GUCCIMAZE and illustrator Jun Inagawa. In the VIP area, you’ll find an art piece by graphic artist YOSHIROTTEN, adding to the Tokyo-centric aesthetic that defines the space. LION offers an exciting fusion of music and art at any time. For music lovers looking to experience Shibuya’s nightlife, it’s definitely a place to check out.

The windows overlook the nightscape of Shibuya. “MIYASHITA PARK” lies directly in front, making this a prime location.

The bar also serves “HABUSH,” a habu snake-infused liquor produced by Awich, a leading figure in Japan’s hip-hop scene.

LION’s original T-shirts, designed by graphic artist GUCCIMAZE, are available for purchase.

The circular counter surrounds the central lion statue, forming the symbolic centerpiece of the space.

LION is located on the 7th floor of the GEM Jingumae building along Meiji Dori. On the 6th floor is the dance club “ENTER shibuya,” and many people enjoy moving between the two.
